Outdoor Activities in Houston in the Fall

When fall hits in Texas, people celebrate. As the weather starts to cool off, suddenly there is a huge emergence of outdoor activities to partake in. The city of Houston comes alive in the fall with multiple festivals and other fun things to do. Texian Market Days are a must-see if you are in the Houston area. Held at George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond, Texas, this is a short 30-minute drive from Houston. The festival is divided into four clearly defined historical sites, and the event features interactive activities, Civil War camps, battle re-enactments, historic home tours, archeological digs, and lots of great food and live entertainment. Texian Market Days are held on the fourth weekend in October.

When the weather starts to cool, taking a stroll through Houston’s Museum District is the best. The Houston Museum District contains 20 museums that span art, history, science, and culture. All of the museums offer free days and 11 of the 20 museums are free all the time. The Museum of Fine Arts is the nation’s sixth largest art museum, The Houston Museum of Natural Science is home to the largest emerald crystal ever recovered in North America, and the Children’s Museum of Houston has Houston’s first and only 4D theater. These are only a few notable highlights of many in this thriving neighborhood of Houston.

Nothing tastes better than a fully aged, crisp glass of wine on a cool, fall day. Houston Wine Festival is 2-day festival held in Hermann Square Park that celebrates the wine capital of Texas in a big way. The event takes place September 28th-29th. In its 5th year, the festival showcases over 200 wines and specialty foods. With over 15,000 attendees expected, the festival is sure to be a great time for locals and visitors alike.

Texans are known for going big or going home, and their annual Renaissance Festival is no exception. The Texas Renaissance Festival is located in Todd Mission, Texas, one hour Northwest of Houston and runs from October 11th through November 30th. Located on over 55-acres, the festival brings to life the Renaissance era with a series of eight themed weekends. There are hundreds of costumed performers showcasing over 200 daily performances. Visitors wander down cobblestone walkways and are able to take in over 400 unique shops containing unique arts, food, and drink.
